How To Transition Refugee Students into Canadian Classrooms

There are many factors to consider when transitioning refugee students into the Canadian classroom:

-students are coming from traumatic situations.  It is paramount to help students feel safe in Canadian classrooms.

-English or French language learning are necessary, but not urgent!  While students need to learn English and/or French to be successful in Canadian schools, this will happen, once students feel safe and comfortable to learn in Canadian schools.

-the entire refugee family is working to transition to Canada.  This means that while parents are trying to help their children negotiate Canadian schools, they are also learning how to navigate life in Canada.  So many pressures on refugee families to learn so much, so quickly!

There are many more factors related to refugee settlement in Canada.  Through this blog, I will continue to explore the specific steps I have employed to help in the transitioning of refugee and immigrant students to Canada.
