The first priority in transitioning a refugee student into Canadian schools is to place them with a peer-mentor.
- partner with a peer-mentor who attends most of the same classes, so they can solve problems together, throughout the school day.
-the peer-mentor does not have to be a leader in the school. In fact, this is an opportunity for a student who may be quiet or a student who needs an outlet, to demonstrate their abilities.
-the peer-mentor can provide detailed support that the classroom teacher or consultant does not have the time to address.
