Settlement Support Workers: Refugee Settlement

Settlement Support Workers are important in the settling of refugees in Canada.  They are needed both in the community and in schools.  Settlement Support Workers can help the community and schools navigate the logistics of refugee settlement.

Settlement Support Workers or Settlement Support Workers in Schools (SSWIS) can:

-negotiate or facilitate communication with refugee families and community agencies

-provide transportation between home and school, when necessary, such as an ill student

-provide nuanced support in helping community members and refugee families develop relationships

-help refugee families find appropriate clothing for the Canadian climate

-be aware of psychological support that may be required for some refugee families
