(The word "snow", written in Punjabi, by a student.)
While the experience of the first snow fall for Refugee and Immigrant families may be exciting, there are some transition elements that need to be addressed for settlement during Canadian winters. Some of the settlement issues to be addressed include:
-Clothing that is warm enough to function in winter weather.
-Adjusting the heating temperature in housing.
-Finding bedding that will be warm enough to sleep in.
-What temperatures and wind chills are too cold to be outside for an extended time.
-How to prevent frostbite and what to do, if it occurs.
-How to safely walk or drive on ice and packed snow.
