The Courage to Teacher
The 20th Anniversary Edition of 'The Courage to Teach' by Parker J. Palmer (2017) is an opportunity to reflect on the profession of teaching over the past 20 years. Palmer originally published this book in 1997.
Some of the chapters include:
-The Heart of a Teacher: Identity and Integrity in Teaching
-A Culture of Fear: Education and the Disconnected Life
-Learning in Community: The Conversation of Colleagues
From my perspective of being in the field of education for almost 30 years, there have been many improvements in the life of an educator. Some of those include moving from teaching in isolated classrooms, to collaborating with colleagues and learning in community.
Some of the challenges include the ever increasing pressure for educators to solve the perceived ills of society, while standardizing education, despite the pleas of educators to do otherwise.
Perhaps Palmer's chapter 'Divided No More: Teaching from a Heart of Hope' is an on-going call for teachers to be allowed to make informed decisions that support the learning of all students!
