"Well-Intentioned" is not Good Enough: Refugee Settlement

In my first graduate class at the University of Regina, professor Dr. Lace Brogden, made a statement saying, "Well-intentioned is not good enough..."

This statement jarred me!  How could she say that?  My intentions are usually good and often altruistic. Isn't that good enough?
Can't I just want the best for everyone and proceed with that?
Can't I just work hard for the common good and always do my best?  Won't that be good enough?  Can't I just help those who are less fortunate than me?  Isn't that good enough?

As I reflected on this statement, and continued my graduate studies, I began to realize the ramifications of this statement.  And now, with the new government policies, this is an important statement to consider.

Canadians want to be seen as altruistic and helpful to those who are struggling. If we do this in an informed and strategic manner, refugee families can successfully settle in Canada.
